Prime Minister Hun Sen has announced that the government will develop the Run Ta Ek area into a new potential city with all the necessary infrastructure provided to ease the lives and careers of over 6,000 families.

The Prime Minister stated in a public announcement on 13 September that the establishment of the new Run Ta Ek city will be an important example of the sustainable urban planning policy and an effective solution to the unorganized construction and public land encroachment issues.

He added that this is a win-win policy. People who used to illegally occupy state land and live in a slum area along the Siem Reap River will get decent housing in a well-prepared new city, while the government can utilize the unorganized slum area as a beautiful walking path for tourists and locals.

“If the city of Run Ta Ek is successful, it will be a model for solving the problem of disorganized housing across the country, a sustainable and effective development, I would say,” said PM Hun Sen.

The city of Run Ta Ek, which covers an area of more than 1,300 hectares in the Banteay Srei district, will be a new home for more than 6,000 families living who moved from the unorganized housing along the Siem Reap River and some other areas in the Apsara protected zones.

According to the plan, the area will have a 140km concrete road (18km was built so far), a US$3-million water treatment plant, a drainage system, water system, hospitals, and schools, among other necessary infrastructure not only for living but also for earning money.

People living there will also get incentives and support from the government through underprivileged people’s funds.

Under this scheme, people who volunteer to relocate from the Siem Reap River will also receive a land title immediately without having to wait for up to five years.

PM Hun Sen also called for assistance from the private sector to involve in the development of this new city in all areas, especially asking the microfinance institutions to provide loans to those people at low-interest rates so that they can start their new careers easier.

According to PM Hun Sen, all his orders are a long-term policy for up to 10 years, and the government also plans to issue an official decision to implement this project.
